Arranging Furniture

Furniture makes a room livable. Imagine a room without a place to sit. Without furniture you just have walls, a ceiling and a floor. Furnishings are functional items in a room that make the room comfortable and pleasant to live in.

The first thing you need to consider in furniture placement is the location of the focal point in the room. Sometimes it’s as obvious as a fireplace or other important architectural element. Oftentimes it is not as obvious. In this case, it will be up to you to create a focal point with the arrangement of furniture. When you walk into the room, what is the first thing that you notice? Is it a bay window? An interesting wall treatment? This is what you will build your focal point around.

Place your largest furniture pieces first. In the living room it’s the sofa, in the bedroom it is the bed and in the dining room it’s the table. If you don’t have a natural focal point, then the larger furniture pieces can fake it. Don’t put all your large pieces together as this will upset the balance of the room. Once the pieces are placed, arrange the furnishings related to them.

As you continue to arrange the furniture, think about the use of the room. Consider the small things; are there enough flat surfaces to place a drinking glass if you plan to entertain, are there adequate conversation areas. Ensure that you have enough tables for lamps so there is adequate lighting. Considering these little things will allow you to properly arrange the furniture.

Try to keep a balance of upholstered and non-upholstered furniture pieces. A room that contains only one or the other is out of balance, is uninviting and has no visual interest. Remember to consider rugs, draperies and pillows as soft fabric areas. These items can be used to balance out hard wood furnishings.

Ensure that your furniture pieces are in keeping with the scale of the room and learn to recognize a scale fault. When you observe two small chairs opposite a large sofa you’ll know that it is balanced. When you see an oversized coffee table in front of a tiny love seat, you’ll recognize it as an error in scale. Whenever something is out of scale move it to another area or store it until you find the right spot for it.

Although it is a common practice, it is recommended that you do not place any furniture directly against the wall, unless it is a bookshelf or other storage unit. You don’t want your living room to resemble a hospital waiting room. Start by arranging the furniture in the center of the room or around the focal point.

You can also place the furniture on the diagonal; a diagonal book case or table can hide awkward nooks or corners, and detract attention away from other design flaws in the room. Pull the sofa from the wall and place a table behind it to accommodate an interesting lamp, vase or plant.

If the room is spacious or exceptionally long, divide it into sections and group different sets of furniture around the room for different activities. When all is said and done, the furniture arrangements should accommodate your client’s lifestyle.
